Where is it going?

Outside the door, a recessed matwell, or loose-laid on a finished floor. Outdoor mats need to drain and shrug off weather. Matwell mats are cut to the void and matched to its depth so they sit flush. Loose-lay mats need a bevelled edge and a backing that won't creep.

How busy is the entrance?

Footfall sets the construction. Small offices and private practices are fine on a lighter mat. Retail, care homes and busy receptions want 9 mm or thicker with a reinforced backing. Schools, hospitals and transport hubs need heavy-duty matting that holds its pile under constant traffic.

What is it there to do?

Outside, mats scrape and drain — rubber and open-grid shed grit and water rather than holding it. Inside, absorbent pile takes rain off shoes before it reaches your floors. Absorbent pile won't survive outdoors, so keep it behind the door.

What size do you need?

Every visitor should take at least three steps on the matting, so length along the direction of travel matters more than width. Measure a matwell by the void — length, width and depth. Outdoor mats need enough weight or a fixing so wind can't lift them.
