Entrance Mat Sizing Guide

Have you ever purchased a mat only to find it's too small to catch dirt or too large for your doorway? Selecting the right-sized mat is essential, not just for aesthetics but also for practicality. The correct mat size enhances your entrance's look, keeps floors cleaner, and improves safety by effectively removing dirt and moisture.

This guide helps you choose the perfect mat size for your home's front door, a busy commercial entrance, or a long hallway with heavy foot traffic.

Single Door Entrances

For single-door entrances, you generally need smaller mats. The most common size is 60cm x 85cm, which suits standard doors perfectly. This size allows visitors to comfortably clean their shoes without crowding the entrance.

Smaller mats (around 40cm x 60cm) are also available, ideal for smaller entrances such as the back door to a home. However, the smaller size will make it less effective (less likely to be stepped on) and more likely to slide around on the floor.

If possible, always aim to fill out the space in front of your door as much as possible.

Recommended Sizes:

  • 40cm x 60cm (small doors/apartments)

  • 60cm x 85cm (standard single doors)

  • 90cm x 300cm (Runner mat for longer hallways)

Double Door Entrances

Double-door entrances naturally need larger mats. As mentioned above, filling the space in front of the door is the best strategy, so patio doors or other wider entrances will need a bigger mat.

Common sizes include 85cm x 120cm and 90cm x 150cm. These mats effectively handle the increased foot traffic and cover the larger entry area, helping to trap more dirt and moisture.

Recommended Sizes:

  • 85cm x 120cm

  • 90cm x 150cm

  • Custom sizes

Commercial Entrances

Commercial entrances, such as shops, cafes, and offices, often experience high foot traffic. For these entrances, larger mats around 115cm x 180cm are recommended.

The larger mats provide extensive coverage, improve cleanliness, reduce slip hazards, and offer a professional appearance.

Being bigger also makes the mats naturally heavier, making them much less likely to move on the floor than a small mat.

Recommended Size:

  • 115cm x 180cm

  • 115cm x 240cm

  • 150cm x 250cm

Mat Runners for Extended Spaces

Mat runners are designed for longer spaces like hallways, corridors, and entryways in busy commercial settings.

The bigger the mat, the more times it will be stepped on, and the better it will perform.

Typical runner sizes like 90cm x 300cm effectively capture dirt and moisture along their length, keeping larger areas cleaner and safer.

Making the Right Mat Choice

There are many more sizes to choose from, and if you can't find the right one for you, consider using a custom size mat for a tailored fit.

Choosing the perfect mat size depends on doorway dimensions, foot traffic levels, and desired aesthetics. By selecting the right size, you'll enhance the appearance of your entrance, improve safety, and keep indoor spaces cleaner and more welcoming.
