Air Compressors, as their name suggests, compress air to create the power needed to run equipment such as pneumatic tools and spray guns, as well as pumping up tyres and filling gas cylinders – the same mechanism is also at work in heat pumps and dentist drills. With such as wide range of uses, you’ll find Air Compressors in many industries, from construction and agriculture to mining and metal working.
Powered by an electric or petrol motor, air is drawn into the Air Compressor's cylinder and compressed. This compression is measured in PSI (pounds per square inch) or Bar – the higher the PSI / Bar, the more power the compressor has. The compressed air is then stored in the receiver tank until it is used as a source of energy for tools.
Air Compressors are an essential piece of equipment in many industries – as important as supplies of electricity, water and gas.
We have a wide range of portable air compressors with different power outputs, from 1 to 3 horse power and a maximum air pressure of 116psi (8bar).
All of them are portable, making them ideal for indoor industrial settings such as workshops and garages – smaller models such as the Portable 1hp Air Nail and Brush Compressor are suitable for DIY use. Larger models, such as the 3hp 100 Litre Portable Compressor V-Twin Direct Drive, are more suited to heavy duty industrial applications.
First Mats' Air Compressors all feature a Direct Drive design, which means that the pump head is directly connected to the motor. This means there are fewer moving parts than with belt-driven Air Compressors, so there is less need for repairs.
All are electric powered, rather than gas-powered, which helps to reduce noise levels (note: some models may need to be used with ear / eye defenders; details can be found in with the instructions). And all are designed to be used with Air Compressor oil.
Safety features include:
For more on safe working with Air Compressors, see HSE’s industry guidance HSG39 'Compressed Air Safety'.
We also have two types of Air Compressor oils: general purpose blended mineral oil and fully synthetic oil that can be used in very cold conditions. Both types of oil meet the relevant ISO Standard.
