What are Drum Overpack Containers?

Drum Overpack Containers are large plastic containers designed to house oil and liquid drums, effectively creating a buffer by enclosing the drum in a protective shell. This means that drum containers containing chemicals and other hazardous materials can be moved safely and securely.

Even if any of the drums do leak or spill, there is no leakage beyond the confines of the Drum Overpack Container – instead the leak is safely contained in the sump.

Many Drum Overpack Containers meet the relevant UN Standards for transporting dangerous goods, so that they can be used to ship drums both within the UK and internationally.

How do Drum Overpack Containers work?

Drum Overpack Containers provide a tough protective outside layer to house the drums. Look out for these features that ensure that no hazardous material can escape, including:

Sump with enough capacity to hold leaks / spills from the drum
Lids that screw down or twist down (many also have a closed gasket that helps the seal to close)
UV protection, so that the container can resist the damaging effects of direct sunlight and will not degrade over time

Chemical resistance

Many Drum Overpack Containers are also designed to ship damaged, leaking or non-compliant drums – otherwise known as an Overpack Salvage Drum. This will also be clearly labelled on the Overpack Container.

It meets the Group 1 Performance Packing Standards of UN Regulations and functions as a Salvage Drum - as do our larger containers for 72L, 130L and 205L drums. This makes them ideal for a wide range of shipping and handling operations.

Our 340L Overpack Container - Medium Duty can also be used to contain damaged or leaking drums, and is safe to use on site (not public roads).

Finally, our versatile UN Approved Overpack Containers can safely store, transport and handle drums containing hazardous materials, and are suitable for a wide range of other tasks including spill containment, clean-up and bio-waste disposal. Available in three sizes, to house 20, 30 or 95 US gallons.
